Brief History of Cabot Bars

History of the Cabot Bars
- The Cabot bars has been owned and personally managed by the Haskins family since 1928 and is now with its fourth generation.
- 1928 - The first generation Fred and Mae Haskins moved from Bristol to Weston -Super-Mare and bought first terrace house over the next five years they bought the adjoining two terraced houses In 1933 they turned the three terraced houses into CABOT HOTEL. With 43 bedrooms the Cabot earned 2 star AA and RAC. (classy back then).
- 1940 - The Cabot was requisitioned by the government and used to house Polish air force This went on for six years and finally de-requisitioned in 1946 after this the Cabot needed a major refit and was reopened in 1947.
- Twenty years later saw the next big change of the Cabot bars with the extension of the dining area opening to the public not just hotel guests and a year later a full license was granted to the premise. With the popularity of these changes we opened our first licensed bar in 1970 with a limited menu and light snacks on offer this created the Tudor bar.
- 1972 - We expanded again with the purchase of Esplanade cottage and Taylor’s tobacconist opening the Hansom Cab bar and building new and larger kitchens we could increase the size of our menus and had a large dining area.
- 1973 - Another time to change due to the introduction of European package holidays the Cabot Hotel became Cabot court changing the hotel into 24 self contained holiday flats. A year later another bar opened one that is our sports bar now in 1974 the Albany became a night club with a 2am license over the next few years renewals and refurbishments were made to keep the Cabot the place to visit in the town.
- 1980 - The Albany club closed and the skittle alley was installed the start of the sports bar. 1982 saw the first of our floods with both the cellar bars and cellar being flooded.
- 1986 - Saw the next big change with the extension of the Hansom cab (main bar) and the addition of what is now the Club upstairs. This was originally designed for a lounge bar and a snooker room. Twelve years later the popularity of the snooker diminished and it was reopened with a large dance floor and late license. Various refurbishments and small changes followed but it was not until nearly a decade later that the next major change occurred, in 2005, which included the addition of the sixth bar. The main bar terrace/function room bar and the top two club bars were completely revamped. With this came new toilets (including a disabled toilet) and a chill out bar. This created a totally new feel to the place giving it a modern feel, but still warm and welcoming. The club went through extensive change increasing the occupancy by one third and a new light and sound system was installed with visual music.
